California composer Mark Applebaum often uses junk (more diplomatically known as “found objects”) to give his musicians instruments from which to elicit unique timbres.  Smoke & Mirrors percussion ensemble gives us a great example of this in in Catfish, the overture to what was supposed to have been a full length “white trash opera” which Applebaum has not completed.  In our case, our musicians chose wooden planks, metal planks and conga drums for their instruments.   Professor Applebaum teaches at Stanford.
