Robert Vijay Gupta joined the Los Angeles Philharmonic at the age of 19, after completing a Master’s in Music from Yale, and a Bachelor’s in biology from Marist College.

As a violin soloist, Vijay has performed with the Japan and Israel Philharmonic Orchestras, and as guest concertmaster with LA Opera and London Philharmonic Orchestra.

Gupta serves as a faculty member of Longy School of Music of the Bard College Masters of Arts in Teaching Program and also teaches at The Colburn School in Los Angeles.

Mr. Gupta served as a 2017 Citizen Artist Fellow with the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and a 2011 TED Senior Fellow.

Vijay founded Street Symphony in 2011, and has served as Artistic Director ever since.  Street Symphony is dedicated to bringing free, live music to people living in homelessness and incarceration.  It is in recognition of and support for Gupta’s work on social issues as well as in appreciation of his talent as a musician that the MacArthur Foundation awarded him the prestigious “Genius Award” in 2018.
